Why does aluminum give off carbon monoxide when it reacts with water?

I'm reacting aluminum with water to prodcue hydrogen that we power a fuel cell with. We are detecting low quantities of carbon monoxide and I have no idea where the carbon/carbon monoxide is coming from. There is no carbon in the metals I am using.
